Kabini

RED EARTH

...of Backwaters & Breeze

Welcome to Kabini!

There’s a whisper in the wind. A little song about the land of the Jenu Kurubas and the Kaadu Kurubas, who have claimed this vista their home for generations. A song about a forest land reverberating with life. About eagles that soar above the marshlands. About the lordly elephants, grandmasters of the jungle. And about the king that rules these lands, with his golden fleece and royal gait.

It’s no surprise that there are so many songs sung in praise of Kabini, one of the richest biodiversity spots and tiger territories in the country.

Kabini is located on the edge of the Nagarhole or Rajeev Gandhi national park The Kabini corridor connects the Bandipur and Nagarhole national parks .Kabini corridor is part of the Nillgiri Biosphere connecting Nagarhole, Bandipur, Mudumalai Wayanad and Several other parks making it one of the largest stretches of forests in India. The backwaters of the Kabini river provide water even during the driest months. As water recedes in Summer grass sprouts in areas where the water has receded making it a green oasis in otherwise dry surroundings.

Once the hunting grounds of the erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore Presidency, Kabini is now a haven for wildlife. Vast backwaters provide a source of food and water to all beings alike. The region gets its name from the Kabini River, a tributary of the Cauvery.
Kabini is home to a plethora of biodiversity; it lies on the fringes of the Nagarhole National Park, itself home to nearly 250 species of birds, 40-50 species of mammals, countless insects and arachnids and so on. Of course, Kabini and Nagarhole are tiger land as well; both regions declared a Project Tiger core area in the late 90s. One can often see huge herds of elephants sometimes numbering over 50 and Gaur, herds of deer, birds and even predators like the tiger and leopard quenching their thirsts. This is unique to Kabini. Kabini is also home to the majestic and elusive Black panther The park is open throughout the year and weather is always moderate.

The Kurubas are Kabini’s caretakers. Hailing from an ancient shepherd clan that was part of a large section of south India, Kurubas have their roots entrenched in the forests. Jenu Kurubas, known for their proficiency in honey gathering, and Kaadu kurubas, masters of the forest, are the primary residents here.

Responsible Tourism

Responsible and sustainable tourism are tenets of Red Earth, and we extend the same philosophy to Kabini as well. Everything we do on this grand planet leaves behind a footprint, and we’d like to have a positive impact as our legacy by following the simplest of principles.

Our cottages at Kabini, for instance, are built with red mud that was originally dug up when the site was being excavated. Along with this, we’ve used rammed earth for the cottages, ensuring that nearly all materials used for the properties are eco friendly.
We’ve also used hand crafted Athangudi tiling for the floors, contributing to local artisans and community. Nearly 95% of our staff hail from local villages, and all our produce is sourced locally as well. Just a few among many ways of giving back to the people and the land.
